So I'm out in rural Iowa on my (probably) last ever survey trip. Rural Iowa is VERY rural. We've eaten at fast food for all but two meals of the last four days, not by choice, but because there are NO sit-down restaurants to eat at.
But lets go back to the beginning. We set out on Monday morning to drive to Burlington, Iowa. Unfortunately, the direct route from Urbana to Burlington was still closed because of the Mississippi river flooding earlier in the summer. So we had to take a longer way around, but still finished surveying the airport by that evening, and stayed in Burlington.
(Tuesday) Then we left civilization and drove almost two hours away to Bloomfield. It was tiny. But thankfully an easy airport to survey. Then we did Albia and Chariton, and drove to Osceola for the night.
(Wednesday) Woke up and surveyed the Osceola airport right there in town, moved on to zoom through Lamoni and Clarinda before stopping for lunch. Red Oak took us most of the afternoon, then we ended up back in Osceola because we couldn't find any other hotels with rooms available.
(Thursday) So the next day wasn't so nice and quick... We woke up and it was raining. But we were hopeful-- the storm looked like it was going to pass by soon, and we were driving against the storm, so it should have been fine by the time we got to our airport 40 miles away. Yeah, it wasn't. New storms kept popping up, and we ended up sitting around from 7am until 2pm until we could work. But once it cleared up, we managed to get that airport done plus another, and then drove to Harlan (where we are now, and where our airport for tomorrow is).
So that's all for now. All in all it's been a fun trip, but I'm looking forward to getting back to Illinois on Saturday.
Oh, and there are way too many cows in Iowa. It kinda smells and there's flies everywhere.
